more sadnesses

inspired by these, I'm adding some more of my own.

SADNESSES OF TIME. sadness of not having enough time. sadness of having too much time with no one to spend it with. sadness of giving away your time in exchange for money. sadness of waiting.  sadness of autumn. sadness of spending the night in a hospital. sadness of lovers being in different time zones. sadness of wasting time. sadness of looking at pictures of yourself with your best friends when you were young.

SADNESSES OF GEOGRAPHY. sadness of borders. sadness of immigration laws. passport photo sadness. sadness of moving away. wanderlust sadness. sadness of traveling alone. homesickness. sadness of friends moving away. sadness of trains. sadness of facebook photos of friends in exotic locals. the sadness of migrating birds. sadness of looking at stars.

SADNESSES OF COMMUNICATION. sadness of waiting too long to write an e-mail. sadness of waiting to be written back. sadness that the right words don't seem to exist at the moment. sadness of telling a joke poorly. sadness of knowing what to say but not having anyone to say it to. sadness of talking to your parents from far away. sadness of saying something in anger. sadness of not knowing where an old friend is and wanting to just say hi, i miss you. sadness of keeping a secret. sadness of crying in front of a stranger. fake-orgasm sadness. sadness of avoidance. sadness of interrupting. the sadness that comes when someone asks how you are and there's no way of really telling them in one sentence which is all they're really asking for, but you wish you could convey it anyway.

desert winter

On our way back south to Phoenix, we made a stop in Sedona, which is known for its new age vortexes, psychics, wealthy adobe mansion owners and spectacular red rock vistas.

Here is a view of the trail we hiked to get to the Bell Rock vortex, a spot of desert with incredible upward flowing energy and some say, healing powers. But I've got to say, I started the hike with beginning symptoms of a cold and a heavy heart and after two hours exploring, when we came back, I was feeling quite jaunty.

and right south of Sedona is this awe-inspiring cliff dwelling known as Montezuma's Castle that's estimated to be as old as 700AD. It looks small in this photo, but up close it's really quite impressive. It was a beautiful day and we had a picnic of cheese and crackers by the river that's flowing just behind where this shot was taken.

adventures in self-publishing

Taken Down by Cody Rocko

This summer I visited NYC and ended up spending some time in Printed Matter in Chelsea. I had been thinking about self-publishing for a while but after seeing so many fantastic artist publications, I decided to do an experiment and try to put together a book myself. I used the ever-popular Blurb.com. It took a while but after compiling and laying out everything, I think the book came together nicely. It's almost 100 pages long!
I'm going to look into a more local or at least smaller publisher and see if I can't make a book that is less costly.

dream log

I dream every night, almost without fail. They're usually pretty wild. Many people have said to me, "you should write those down!" probably because it would mean I wouldn't have to talk about them so much if I were writing them down somewhere. Others have said, "you should illustrate them!" which to me seems like shooting down a bird in flight; bringing something to earth that doesn't really belong here.
But every once in a while I'll write down a particularly poignant dream. This particular one on this page is about inhabiting a body with someone else, a dead snake and a giant shark. I've also included a bit from the dream decoder.
